The only future in which ASI produces broadly positive outcomes is one in which humanity simultaneously undergoes its own cognitive, moral, and spiritual maturation.
Overview
Technical alignment alone is insufficient: humanity needs a simultaneous upgrade in consciousness to be worthy stewards of superintelligence.
Classification
- Geographic concentration
- Global; strong in Northern Europe, US West Coast, India
- Tags
- philosophy
- society
- health
- Scenario type (full)
- Utopian (aspirational) / Coexistence scenario
- Human position
- Sovereign and transformed: humans retain agency because they have grown wise enough
- Time horizon
- Mid to long term (10–50 years); requires deliberate cultivation
- Discourse status
- Fringe to emerging; draws on contemplative traditions, developmental psychology, psychedelic research
Impacts
- Mechanism
- AI-assisted consciousness expansion: AI tools help humans develop higher-order capacities—enhanced empathy, systems thinking, self-awareness, and collective decision-making.
- Domain impacts
- Labor & Income Work transformed by purpose; humans contribute through wisdom, care, and meaning-making. Education Radically reimagined around consciousness development: contemplative practices, systems thinking, ethical reasoning. Governance & Democracy Governance informed by expanded consciousness; leaders with higher developmental capacities. War & Security Reduced conflict because expanded empathy reduces tribalism. Inequality & Class Consciousness expansion can be distributed freely through education and practice. Culture & Art A global renaissance in art, philosophy, and spiritual practice. Meaning & Purpose Central: meaning comes from the growth of consciousness itself. Family & Reproduction Families benefit from expanded empathy and emotional intelligence. Health & Longevity Consciousness expansion benefits mental health: reduced anxiety, depression, addiction. Rights & Agency Right to consciousness expansion; protection from technologies that diminish consciousness. Environment Expanded ecological consciousness transforms humanity's relationship with nature. Existential Survival Potentially the most effective risk reduction: a wise species is less likely to build dangerous AI.

Acceptance
- Key assumptions
- Assumes consciousness can be expanded at scale; assumes expanded consciousness translates into better decision-making; assumes the timeline is compatible with AI development.
- Primary audiences
- Contemplative practitioners, developmental psychologists, integral theory community, psychedelic researchers, metacrisis thinkers
Personas
- Persona 1
- The Contemplative AI Ethicist – Combines meditation with AI ethics research.
- Persona 2
- The Developmental Psychologist – Studies adult development as key to navigating ASI.
- Hard-believer profile
- Name & Age: Dr. Sanne Eriksson, 49. Occupation: Developmental psychologist, meditation teacher, and AI ethics advisor, Stockholm. Core Conviction: We are building godlike power with adolescent wisdom. The inner development of humanity is the most critical variable in whether AI destroys or elevates us. Biggest Fear: That we solve alignment without solving ourselves. Biggest Hope: That the crisis of AI triggers the greatest expansion of human consciousness in history.

A scene from this future
The Circle
A retreat center, Northern Sweden, 2035
They sat in a circle—fourteen of them, from nine countries, in a wooden building surrounded by birch trees and snow.
The screen in the center showed a visualization of their collective attention: a network of brainwave patterns, linked by the AI facilitator into a real-time map of shared awareness. When they breathed together, the network pulsed in unison. When one of them became anxious, the others could see it—a flutter of red in the web—and the group would unconsciously slow its breathing to bring the pattern back into coherence.
Dr. Eriksson watched from the edge. She'd been designing these sessions for a decade—combining meditation practice, AI-facilitated perspective-taking, and developmental psychology exercises into a protocol she called "collaborative consciousness expansion."
Today's exercise was simple: the AI would present a complex policy dilemma about autonomous weapons, and the group would deliberate—not to reach a conclusion, but to practice holding multiple perspectives simultaneously without collapsing into tribalism.
What happened next was what always happened, and what never stopped surprising her. The group didn't argue. They didn't take sides. Instead, the AI visualized each perspective as a spatial position, and the participants moved through them—feeling what it was like to be the military planner, the civilian, the engineer, the child in the conflict zone. Not intellectually. Experientially. The AI translated each perspective into an emotional and cognitive configuration that the participants could inhabit.
After forty minutes, something shifted. The network visualization showed a pattern she'd seen before but could never quite predict: a sudden, spontaneous coherence, as if fourteen separate minds had found a frequency they shared. In that moment, the group could see the problem from above—not any single perspective, but the shape of all the perspectives together.
It wasn't consensus. It was something stranger and more useful: collective sight.
One participant, a former drone pilot, was crying quietly. "I've never understood it from the other side before," he said.
Sanne wrote in her notes: "Day 247. The capacity is real. The question is whether we can scale it fast enough."
Outside, the birch trees stood in the snow, patient as they had been for centuries, waiting for a species that was trying, with everything it had, to grow up.
