Arrival is a science fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve, based on Ted Chiang's 1998 novella "Story of Your Life." The film follows Dr. Louise Banks, a renowned linguist, who is recruited by the U.S. military to communicate with aliens who have arrived at multiple locations worldwide. As she learns their non-linear language, she begins to experience non-linear perception of time, fundamentally altering her understanding of causality and human existence.

The film explores themes of language, communication, determinism, and sacrifice. Its visual design—particularly the alien ships and the circular written language—became iconic in science fiction cinema. The narrative structure mirrors the alien language's non-linear nature, rewarding careful viewing and interpretation.

Arrival was critically acclaimed for its intellectual depth, emotional resonance, and technical achievement. It won the Academy Award for Best Sound Mixing and was nominated for seven Oscars including Best Picture, establishing itself as a landmark contemporary science fiction film that prioritizes ideas and human connection over spectacle.
