The Inner Development Goals (IDG) initiative emerged in the mid-2010s as a response to the recognition that achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals requires not just external policy and technology changes, but also shifts in human consciousness, values, and capabilities. The initiative identifies core inner capacities—such as systems thinking, self-awareness, compassion, and agency—that individuals and societies need to develop to address global challenges sustainably.
IDG operates as a collaborative network bringing together researchers, practitioners, organizations, and thought leaders across sectors including education, business, civil society, and development. The framework maps these inner capacities and explores how they can be cultivated through education, organizational practice, and cultural change. The initiative has gained traction among sustainability professionals and organizations seeking to integrate personal and collective development into their work toward the SDGs.
