Esalen Institute is a nonprofit educational organization founded in 1962 on the Big Sur coast of California. It emerged from the counterculture movement as a center for exploring human potential, consciousness studies, and the integration of Eastern and Western philosophical traditions. The institute brought together thinkers, artists, and scientists to conduct seminars and workshops on topics ranging from meditation and psychology to physics and spirituality.

Esalen became a flagship institution of the Human Potential Movement, hosting influential figures including Alan Watts, Carl Rogers, Aldous Huxley, and later researchers in consciousness studies and transpersonal psychology. The institute's residential programs, workshops, and publications shaped discourse around personal growth, alternative education, and the mind-body connection throughout the late 20th century.

Today, Esalen continues to operate as a retreat and learning center, maintaining its commitment to interdisciplinary exploration while adapting to contemporary interests in neuroscience, ecology, and social transformation. It remains a significant cultural institution influencing fields from psychology to philosophy to organizational development.
