The Leftovers is a supernatural drama series that premiered on HBO in 2014, created by Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta based on Perrotta's 2006 novel. The series follows the residents of Mapleton, New York, and other communities worldwide as they grapple with the sudden, unexplained disappearance of 2% of the global population—an event called the Sudden Departure. Rather than focusing on the mystery of where the vanished went, the show explores how the living cope with inexplicable loss, grief, and the search for meaning in a fractured world.

Across three seasons (2014–2017), the narrative expands from a small-town mystery to a sprawling exploration of faith, identity, and human connection. The series employs magical realism, surreal imagery, and non-linear storytelling to examine how communities and individuals construct meaning after trauma. It features ensemble characters including police chief Kevin Garvey (Justin Theroux), whose family is torn apart by the event, and explores cults, religious movements, and personal obsessions that emerge in response to the Departure.

The Leftovers became a critical darling for its ambitious storytelling, emotional depth, and willingness to prioritize character and theme over plot resolution. Though it initially struggled with ratings, it developed a devoted fanbase and is widely regarded as one of the most innovative and emotionally resonant dramas of the 2010s. The series concludes with a deliberately ambiguous, character-focused finale that emphasizes acceptance and human connection over supernatural explanation.
