TESCREAL is a critical analytical framework that bundles together seven overlapping ideological movements: transhumanism, effective altruism, singularitarianism, rationalism, extropianism, longtermism, and accelerationism. The framework argues these ideologies share common assumptions about technological progress, human enhancement, and existential risk that may lead to misaligned AI development priorities.
The term was popularized by philosopher Émile P. Torres in essays and public discourse beginning around 2022. Torres contends that adherents of these ideologies, particularly within effective altruism and longtermism communities, have disproportionate influence over AI safety research and funding, potentially steering it toward outcomes that prioritize speculative future scenarios over near-term harms.
The TESCREAL framework has become a focal point in debates about AI governance, effective altruism's legitimacy, and the relationship between techno-optimism and AI safety. Critics of the framework argue it conflates distinct movements unfairly, while supporters view it as a necessary tool for identifying ideological capture in AI policy.
