The Limits to Growth is a 1972 report commissioned by the Club of Rome and conducted by researchers at MIT, led by Dennis Meadows. Using system dynamics modeling and computer simulation, the study examined the consequences of a rapidly growing world population and finite resource base. The report projected that if current trends in industrialization, population growth, pollution, food production, and resource depletion continued unchanged, the planet would reach its limits within 100 years, leading to sudden and uncontrollable decline in both population and industrial capacity.

The work became a foundational text in environmental and sustainability studies, influencing policy discussions on climate change, resource management, and economic growth. It introduced the concept of "overshoot and collapse" and argued for a transition to a "steady-state economy." Though some of its specific predictions have been debated and refined, the report's core insight—that infinite growth on a finite planet is impossible—remains central to contemporary sustainability science and has been cited millions of times across academic and policy literature.
