Snowpiercer originated as a French graphic novel by Jacques Lob and Jean-Marc Rochette, published in 1982. The story follows survivors of a failed climate-engineering experiment who live aboard a constantly moving train divided into rigid class sections, with the poor confined to the tail and the wealthy in the front. The narrative explores themes of social hierarchy, revolution, and survival in a frozen wasteland.

Bong Joon-ho's 2013 film adaptation became the most internationally recognized version, starring Chris Evans and Tilda Swinton. It expanded the graphic novel's themes into a visceral critique of capitalism and inequality, with the train serving as a microcosm of stratified society. The film's critical and commercial success led to a television series adaptation (2020–2025) on TNT, which further developed the world-building and character arcs.
