The OECD AI Principles were adopted by OECD member countries in May 2019 as a policy framework for trustworthy artificial intelligence. The principles comprise five core tenets: AI systems should respect human rights and democratic values; they should be transparent and explainable; they should be robust and secure; they should be accountable; and AI development should benefit all and promote inclusive growth.
The framework was developed through multi-stakeholder consultation involving governments, industry, civil society, and academia. It serves as a foundational policy document that has influenced national AI strategies and international AI governance discussions globally. The principles emphasize the need to balance innovation with risk mitigation and societal benefit.
