Neon Genesis Evangelion is a 26-episode anime series that aired in 1995–1996, created by Hideaki Anno and produced by Studio Gainax. The narrative follows Shinji Ikari, a fourteen-year-old boy recruited to pilot a giant biomechanical robot called an Evangelion to defend Tokyo-3 from mysterious alien entities known as Angels. As the series progresses, it deconstructs the mecha genre and explores themes of depression, loneliness, identity, and the human condition through increasingly abstract and psychologically intense storytelling.

The series is notable for its unconventional narrative structure, particularly in its final two episodes, which shift from conventional animation to experimental visual techniques and internal monologue. This departure was partly due to budget constraints but became a defining artistic choice that deepened the psychological exploration of the protagonist's mental state. The ending proved controversial and ambiguous, leading to two theatrical films—The End of Evangelion (1997) and later Rebuild of Evangelion films (2007–2021)—that provided alternative conclusions.

Neon Genesis Evangelion became a cultural phenomenon in Japan and internationally, influencing anime production, narrative design, and discussions of mental health in media. Its impact on the medium is profound, establishing new possibilities for anime as a vehicle for philosophical and psychological inquiry rather than pure entertainment. The series remains widely studied in academic contexts and continues to generate critical discourse decades after its original broadcast.
