The EU AI Act is a regulatory framework adopted by the European Union to govern the development, deployment, and use of artificial intelligence systems. It establishes a risk-based classification system, categorizing AI applications from prohibited high-risk to minimal-risk, with corresponding compliance requirements. The Act mandates transparency, human oversight, and impact assessments for high-risk systems, while banning certain AI practices deemed to pose unacceptable risks to fundamental rights.
The legislation emerged from years of consultation and negotiation among EU institutions, member states, and stakeholders. It represents the first comprehensive AI regulation at the supranational level and has become a model for AI governance globally. The Act applies to both EU-based and non-EU organizations offering AI systems in the European market, making it a significant driver of international AI standards and corporate compliance practices.
