Battlestar Galactica is a science fiction franchise that began as a 1978 television series created by Glen A. Larson. The original series follows the last surviving battleship and a ragtag fleet of human refugees fleeing the robotic Cylons after humanity's near-extinction, searching for the legendary planet Earth.

The franchise was revived in 2004 with a critically acclaimed reimagining that ran for four seasons (2004–2009). This version deepened the mythology, introducing moral ambiguity, religious allegory, and complex character development. The 2004 series became a cultural phenomenon, winning multiple Emmy Awards and spawning spin-offs including the prequel series Caprica and the film Battlestar Galactica: The Plan.

Both versions explore themes of survival, identity, authoritarianism, and what it means to be human. The franchise has influenced subsequent science fiction television and remains significant in discussions of serialized storytelling and speculative fiction.
