Annihilation is the first book in Jeff VanderMeer's Southern Reach trilogy, published in 2014. It follows Lena, a biologist and former soldier, who joins an expedition into Area X, a mysterious zone that has been expanding for decades, surrounded by a shimmering barrier called the Shimmer. The zone defies scientific understanding—plants and animals exhibit impossible mutations, and previous expeditions have either vanished or returned fundamentally changed.

The narrative unfolds through Lena's first-person account of the expedition and her interrogation by a mysterious government agency. VanderMeer employs a deliberately ambiguous, unsettling tone, blending hard science fiction with cosmic horror and ecological themes. The novel explores questions of identity, mutation, and the limits of human knowledge when confronted with the truly alien.

Annihilation became a critical and commercial success, praised for its originality and atmospheric worldbuilding. It spawned two sequels (Authority and Acceptance) and was adapted into a 2018 film directed by Alex Garland, starring Natalie Portman. The work has influenced contemporary science fiction and remains a touchstone for discussions of weird fiction and ecological horror.
