Annihilation is the first novel in Jeff VanderMeer's Southern Reach trilogy, published in 2014. It follows an unnamed biologist and three other women—a surveyor, a psychologist, and an anthropologist—as they enter Area X, a mysterious expanding zone where nature has undergone bizarre and terrifying transformations. The narrative alternates between the biologist's account of their expedition into the zone and interrogation sessions with a mysterious government agency overseeing the investigation.
The novel explores themes of environmental catastrophe, the limits of human understanding, and the uncanny. VanderMeer employs a deliberately ambiguous narrative style, withholding explanations and embracing scientific uncertainty. The work became influential in contemporary science fiction for its atmospheric worldbuilding and refusal to provide easy answers about the nature of Area X.
Annihilation was adapted into a 2018 film directed by Alex Garland, which brought the work to wider mainstream attention. The novel's success established VanderMeer as a major voice in speculative fiction and spawned two sequels: Authority and Acceptance.
