The Anniversary

A birthday party, approximately 2058

Chen was 127 years old today, and he felt forty.

The party was small—his wife (her third body, but the same mind), his children (the oldest was 98 and looked 35), and his grandchildren, who had never known a world where people died of aging and who found the concept as strange as dying of smallpox.

The cake had 127 candles, which was a fire hazard and a tradition he refused to abandon. He blew them out with lungs that had been regenerated twice and felt the warm wash of gratitude he experienced every birthday: gratitude that he was here, that the treatments had come in time, that he had not been born thirty years earlier and died of something trivially curable.

His great-granddaughter, six, asked: “Grandpa, what happens when you get old?”

“Nothing,” he said. “Nothing happens anymore.”

Later, alone, he stood on the balcony and looked at the stars and felt the weight of 127 years of memory. He remembered his mother’s death. He remembered the world before. He remembered being afraid of time.

He was not afraid of time anymore. He was afraid of having too much of it.
