The Seamless Day

Ren thought in two voices now.

The first voice was hers—the one she’d been born with, the one that dreamed in images and worried about her mother and craved chocolate at 3 p.m. The second voice was the interface: faster, quieter, offering data and connections that arrived as intuitions rather than thoughts.

She couldn’t remember what thinking felt like before the merge. This bothered her on Tuesdays, for reasons the interface could not explain and she could not resolve.

At work—she designed sustainable buildings—she and the interface were one system. She could visualize a building’s energy flows the way she once visualized a room. Load-bearing calculations arrived as feelings in her hands. Her colleagues who hadn’t merged watched her work with expressions that mixed admiration and unease.

At home, she turned the interface to “low”—not off, never off, but quiet. She cooked dinner for her father, who was eighty and unmerged and who looked at her sometimes with a tenderness that felt like grief.

“You seem well,” he said.

“I am well,” she said, and meant it, and wondered if “well” was the right word for what she was.
