The Thought

Approximately 2056

Anil felt the thought arrive the way you feel a wave—not his thought alone but the thought of three hundred minds connected through the network.

The problem was climate modeling. Specifically, a feedback loop that no individual researcher had been able to resolve. Anil was a cognitive scientist, not a climatologist, but in the network that didn’t matter. His pattern-recognition instincts merged with a meteorologist’s domain knowledge and a mathematician’s structural intuition and something else—something that was none of them and all of them—and the solution appeared.

It was not his solution. It was not anyone’s solution. It was the network’s, and it was better than anything any of them could have produced alone.

He disconnected at dinner. His wife asked how his day was. He said, “We solved a climate problem.” She asked who “we” was. He tried to explain and couldn’t. “It’s like singing in a choir,” he said. “You can hear your own voice and you can hear the harmony, and the harmony is something none of you are making individually.”

She looked at him with an expression he was learning to read: love, and a small, growing distance.
