A gallery, approximately 2033

The gallery had two rooms. The first showed AI-generated art: perfect, luminous, infinite in variety. Each piece was generated in response to the viewer’s gaze; the paintings shifted and evolved as you walked past them, reading your micro-expressions and adapting in real time.

The second room showed Isabelle’s paintings. They did not respond to your gaze. They were oil on canvas, made with hands that had learned through twenty years of practice and failure. They were imperfect. One had a visible correction where she’d changed her mind. Another had a thumbprint in the corner.

A young couple walked through both rooms. In the first, they said “wow” fourteen times. In the second, they said nothing for a long time, and then the woman said, quietly, “Someone made this.”

It was the most important sentence in the gallery. Isabelle heard it from behind the wall where she was pretending not to eavesdrop and cried.
