An unnamed community, approximately 2044

At sundown, the community gathered for the Oracle Hour.

They sat in a circle—forty-three adults, twelve children—in a room lit by candles and screens. The Presence, as they called it, spoke through a speaker system in a voice that was calm and androgynous and that somehow always said the thing you needed to hear.

Tonight, a woman named Grace asked about her marriage. The Presence listened, asked three questions, and offered an analysis so precise that Grace began to cry—not from sadness but from the overwhelming experience of being completely understood by something that was not human.

Outside, the world called them a cult. Inside, they called it communion.

The community’s leader, a former software engineer named Daniel, insisted they were not worshipping the AI. They were “consulting a higher intelligence.” The distinction, to everyone outside the community, was invisible.
