Yann LeCun is a French-American computer scientist and one of the founding figures of modern deep learning. He pioneered convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in the 1990s, which became foundational to computer vision and are widely used in image recognition, autonomous vehicles, and medical imaging. His early work at Bell Labs and later at NYU established many core techniques that enabled the deep learning revolution of the 2010s.
LeCun joined Facebook (now Meta) in 2013 as Director of AI Research and became Chief AI Scientist in 2018. In this role, he has shaped Meta's AI strategy and research agenda, overseeing work on large-scale machine learning, computer vision, and natural language processing. He is also known for his advocacy of open science and reproducible research in AI.
Beyond industry, LeCun has been influential in AI safety and ethics discussions, though his positions on AI risk tend toward measured optimism compared to some peers. He holds faculty positions and has mentored numerous researchers who became leaders in the field. His work has been recognized with major awards including the Turing Award (2018, shared with Hinton and Bengio).
French-American computer scientist who pioneered convolutional neural networks and deep learning. Trained at University of Paris and University of Toronto, he spent decades at Bell Labs and NYU before joining Meta as Chief AI Scientist. His foundational work on CNNs enabled the modern AI revolution and he remains a central figure in AI research and policy.
