Yanis Varoufakis is a Greek economist and politician best known for his role as Minister of Finance of Greece from January to July 2015, during the country's severe debt crisis and negotiations with international creditors. He became a prominent public intellectual advocating for debt restructuring and challenging austerity policies imposed by the European Union and International Monetary Fund.
Before his political career, Varoufakis was an academic economist, teaching at universities including the University of Athens and University of Texas at Austin. He is known for his work on game theory, political economy, and critiques of mainstream economic models. His 2011 book "The Global Minotaur" analyzes global economic imbalances and the 2008 financial crisis from a heterodox perspective.
After leaving office, Varoufakis became an influential voice in progressive politics and economic reform movements across Europe. He co-founded the Democracy in Europe Movement 2025 (DiEM25) to advocate for democratic reform of European institutions. He has written extensively, given numerous public lectures, and maintained a significant media presence, positioning himself as a critic of technocratic governance and advocate for alternative economic frameworks.
