The Writers Guild of America is a labor union representing screenwriters and television writers in the United States. Founded in 1933, it has negotiated collective bargaining agreements with major studios and production companies, establishing industry standards for compensation, working conditions, and creative rights. The WGA is known for major strikes in 1968, 2008, and 2023; the 2023 strike lasted 148 days and resulted in the first collectively-bargained protections against artificial intelligence in creative work, including provisions limiting AI-generated content and requiring human authorship credit. The union operates through two branches: the Writers Guild of America, West (covering film, television, and new media) and the Writers Guild of America, East (covering similar media in the eastern United States).
