The Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW) is a multilateral treaty framework established in 1980 under UN auspices to restrict or prohibit the use of specific weapons deemed to cause unnecessary suffering or indiscriminate harm. The CCW operates through periodic Review Conferences and Group of Governmental Experts meetings, where state parties negotiate protocols addressing weapons such as mines, booby traps, incendiary weapons, and more recently autonomous weapons systems and lethal autonomous weapons (LAWS). Discussions under the CCW represent one of the primary diplomatic venues for international weapons regulation, though enforcement and consensus-building remain challenging given divergent national security interests.
