The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the UN's global development network, established to help countries eliminate poverty and reduce inequalities. It operates in nearly 170 countries and territories, providing technical expertise, funding, and policy advice across development priorities including poverty reduction, democratic governance, climate change adaptation, and disaster risk reduction.
UNDP works by partnering with governments, civil society, and the private sector to design and implement development solutions tailored to local contexts. The organization manages the Human Development Report, a flagship publication that tracks global progress on human development indicators and influences international development discourse.
As a subsidiary organ of the UN General Assembly, UNDP is funded through both regular UN budgets and voluntary contributions from member states. It plays a central role in supporting countries' progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and serves as a key implementing partner for many UN initiatives.
