The National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence (NSCAI) was established by the U.S. Congress in 2018 as part of the National Defense Authorization Act. Led by Eric Schmidt (former Google CEO) as chair and Robert Work as vice chair, the commission was tasked with developing a comprehensive national strategy to advance AI capabilities while protecting national security and economic competitiveness.

The commission conducted extensive research, held hearings with industry and government experts, and released its final report in March 2021. The report emphasized the urgency of AI development for U.S. strategic advantage, recommended substantial federal investment in AI research and infrastructure, and called for policies to attract and retain AI talent.

NSCAI's work significantly influenced subsequent U.S. AI policy discussions and executive orders on AI governance. The commission's recommendations shaped debates around AI regulation, national competitiveness, and the balance between innovation and safety considerations in federal policy.
