The Future of Life Institute is a nonprofit organization founded in 2014 to mitigate existential and catastrophic risks to humanity. FLI is best known for convening the Asilomar AI Principles (2017), a widely-cited framework for beneficial AI development endorsed by leading researchers and industry leaders. The organization has also coordinated major open letters, including the 2023 letter calling for a pause on large language model training, and produced influential media campaigns such as the Slaughterbots short film (2017) highlighting autonomous weapons risks. FLI's work spans AI safety, biosecurity, nuclear security, and other global catastrophic risks, combining research, policy advocacy, and public engagement to promote long-term thinking about humanity's future.
