BrainGate is a collaborative research effort founded to develop and test brain-computer interface (BCI) systems that allow people with severe paralysis to control external devices through neural signals. The consortium brings together researchers from Brown University, Stanford University, Massachusetts General Hospital, and other institutions to advance neuroprosthetic technology.

The project is best known for clinical trials in which paralyzed patients with electrodes implanted in motor cortex regions learned to control computer cursors and robotic arms by thought alone. These landmark studies demonstrated the feasibility of direct neural control for communication and manipulation tasks, providing proof-of-concept for therapeutic BCI applications.

BrainGate has produced numerous peer-reviewed publications and has been instrumental in establishing safety protocols and ethical frameworks for invasive neural recording in human subjects. The consortium continues to work toward clinical translation of BCI technology for restoring function in paralysis, stroke, and neurodegenerative disease.
